This 7,800 SF renovation of a portion of the prominent Glendale Central Library transformed the children’s and teen areas into vibrant, welcoming spaces for the community to study, socialize, create, explore, and learn. The scope included a central activity area for story time, arts and crafts, and STEAM activities, a new Early Children’s section, an enclosed study area, a teen collaboration space, a recording studio, and a video gaming wall — all united by an intricate, multi-colored domed ceiling that serves as the breathtaking centerpiece of the entire project.
A Unique Challenge: No Plan Dimensions
The hallmark challenge of this project was one that most contractors rarely face: there were no plan dimensions for the ceiling design. Architect Johnson Favaro provided concept renderings — vivid artistic visions inspired by Byzantine architecture — but translating those into precise, field-ready proportions and layouts fell entirely to Magnum. Working in real time and in close collaboration with the architect throughout construction, Magnum’s team developed the layout from the ground up, determining proportions, geometry, and color transitions directly from the renderings and validating every decision with the design team as the work progressed.
This kind of interpretive precision — bridging artistic concept and construction reality without the safety net of dimensioned drawings — is exactly where Magnum’s experience and craftsmanship set it apart. The finished ceiling is proof of what’s possible when a skilled contractor and a talented design team work in true partnership.

Material Coordination & Execution
Beyond the ceiling, the project featured a rich array of finish materials throughout the renovated spaces — from custom wallcoverings and specialty flooring to interactive learning and play installations. Magnum coordinated closely with PCL Construction, the general contractor, to keep the project on schedule and ensure every element was installed to specification.
The Result:
- An intricate, multi-colored domed ceiling installed to precise proportions developed entirely from concept renderings, with no plan dimensions
- Seamless real-time collaboration with Johnson Favaro throughout construction, translating artistic vision into a buildable reality
- A finished product that exceeded the expectations of the architect, the City of Glendale, and the Library, Arts and Culture Department
- A beautiful, inspiring new space now enjoyed daily by children, teens, and families at the Glendale Central Library
